Things to Consider
When purchasing a new system:
Even more important than the equipment selection, is to determine if the system is sized properly for your home. Often times, the existing equipment is oversized for the house. Many times in new construction, the HVAC contractor gives the builder a “per-ton” price. The contractor would then upsize the equipment a half ton. This was never correct.
Most of the time, the homeowner doesn’t realize they have a problem and just assumes that the performance and efficiency they have is normal. Compounding the problem, is when HVAC contractors don’t determine the proper size of a system by assuming what’s already there is properly sized.
Oversized systems start and stop too often causing:
- Lower efficiency and higher utility bills
- Poor humidity control (which can lead to increased growth of mold & dust mites)
- Increased wear and tear on equipment parts resulting in repairs and shorter equipment life
- Decreased comfort
- Sweating ducts and registers
- Uneven temperatures and greater temperature swings in the house
- An HVAC system can only be as efficient as the duct system will allow it to be.
The Department of Energy states that, “Typical duct systems lose 25-40% of the energy put out by the central furnace, heat pump or air conditioner.”
The best filtration available can only be effective with a sealed duct system. Undersized duct will decrease comfort, efficiency and filter performance and also place undue stress on system operation. Think of a system operating with undersized duct like a marathon runner having to breathe through a straw.
